Wolfie (aka Matty) came to Charles River Alleycats after the Somerville Animal Control Officer was called to pick up a stray cat. He was thin and very scared and shy. The ACO took him in and fostered him while CRA looked for a home. She named him Matty. He was a timid 4-5 month old which makes him difficult to adopt to a lot of people.
Along came Cheri who inquired about him. She had lost a kitty and was thinking about a new companion for her cat Silas. She was interested in meeting him. At the same time, her mother emailed her about a cat she found on our website she thought Cheri might be interested in - and it was the same kitty! Cheri went to meet him and that’s where the happy ending started.
She brought Matty, now named Wolfie, into his new home and gave him a quiet upstairs bedroom. He quickly scouted out the terrain, and made a swift retreat underneath a couch that was barely 3 inches off the ground, where he remained until evening. They propped the couch up on blocks to give him a few more inches of space, but not too high so he would still feel secure and protected. Later in the evening he ventured out from underneath the couch each time Cheri came in to visit, and warmed up very quickly.
Over the next few days he became very comfortable. He was no longer hiding in the room and was playing nonstop. After he had been with them for about four days it was time to introduce him to Silas - their two-year old kitty who came from the woods out in back of the house as a stray last year. Silas is extremely laid-back and friendly - nothing rattles him. He's also very affectionate, and very much wanted a companion cat. After getting to know each other through a crate (Wolfie inside, Silas out) for a few days - the door was opened one morning and Wolfie walked out. Silas ran over to him - and they began to play immediately, with not a hiss or growl, and romped non-stop for about six hours. At that point they collapsed to nap together in front of the glass door leading to the back yard (which is a major source of entertainment for them) and fell asleep - paws touching. Cheri could not believe it when she saw it. She was so proud of Silas for accepting his new pal right away, and for Wolfie to feel so comfortable in his new home.
Wolfie has become confident and very comfortable in his new home. He is now very devoted and affectionate - such a sweet boy. He is super curious and interested in everything! He's even begun to relax more and more with new people when they visit. He is no longer fearful of new things, and often looks to Silas to gauge his reaction and then quickly decides that everything is ok.
Cheri states:
Yay Wolfie!
